Aspen, Colorado is one of the most beautiful places for a winter elopement. When Ashley reached out to me with her vision for their elopement, I was SO excited. But to be honest, it blew me out of the water when we actually got to experience the day that we planned together! But not without some speed bumps…
Ashley and I did a ton of research during the planning process of their elopement. Having a winter elopement in Colorado is a lot trickier with a lot less accessibility to the mountains. The lack of access plus the cold winter conditions can make it a lot more difficult to go to epic locations. The bitter cold can also make it hard to even be outside for too long. But we found a trail just outside of Aspen that would be perfect for a little snowshoeing adventure to a lodge where we could warm up, find a spot for their vows, and snowshoe back while taking photos along the way.
Ashley and Erik actually arrived in town a couple days early and decided to scope out the trail ahead of time, which is a really good thing they did! They discovered that the area actually charges a fee for snowshoeing, and we couldn’t even snowshoe on the trail we had picked. There was an alternative trail where we were allowed to snowshoe, but it had a curfew! We encountered so many unexpected obstacles that weren’t listed online when we researched. So a big shoutout to Ashley and Erik for scoping out the spot ahead of time and finding a perfect spot for their vows because it ultimately made the elopement day go so smoothly.
We started the day at their beautiful hotel in Aspen where the vibes were killer. Taking our time getting all the detail shots, getting ready, and first look photos. We then packed up and headed out to the trail where we snowshoed to this beautiful overlook of the mountains. This was the perfect spot where they said their vows to each other.
After we were too cold to stay out any longer, we headed back to Aspen! We warmed up at their hotel for more moodier photos. This is where I want to recommend to all my couples to pick the vibiest hotel or Airbnb. This way we can go back and take all the cozy moody pictures if you’re planning a winter elopement! This will give us so much more variety when we are limited to outdoor photos due to the cold. You won’t regret it!
We wanted to end the day with a casual session! Ashley and Erik changed into their comfiest clothes and we played around the hotel being totally goofy. We were able to capture a completely different side to their relationship by baking a cake, having a pillow fight, reading the newspaper, and just messing around!
This was a FULL day of adventure and just having a ton of fun! I highly recommend doing a full day of coverage so that we can tell the story of your relationship. The more time we get the more activities we can experience to capture as much variety as possible. There’s so many fun activities we can do to bring out all sides of your personalities.
